FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Attendance: Campers must make a commitment to be at camp for the entire week.  Campers are not allowed to arrive late to camp and/or leave early.  There is no going and coming during the week.  Should an emergency arise which would require the camper to go home early, arrangements must be made with a member of the Brighton Presidency who will make the necessary arrangements in camp. In this case, the person responsible to pick up the camper must properly check out with the Camp Director before the camper leaves camp.

Bunk Mates: At Brighton, there are 18 units consisting of 8 to 10 girls each week. Many young women choose to attend camp alone so they can meet new people, while others like to have a familiar face with them in their unit. You are welcome to choose what is best for you. If you would like to have a specific bunk mate, please write the name(s) of those you would like to bunk with on your registration card. Each camper may write two names and those same names must have your camper’s name on their registration card.  Your leaders will make sure you are with at least one of the girls you have listed.

Camp Leadership: Brighton camp functions under the direction of the Brighton Presidency, Executive Committee and Priesthood Advisory Committee. A staff of 35 wonderful adult young women is hired to lead, guide, and direct the activities of camp.  Campers will be under the supervision of a counselor at all times and are not permitted to leave the camp boundaries without being accompanied by a staff member. The Director is the chief authority in camp. She or the Brighton presidency will handle all questions and/or concerns.

Cell Phones/Electronics: Cell phones and all other electronic devices are not allowed at Brighton Camp. Cell phones interfere with camp programs, encourage homesickness and defeat the purposes of sending campers to Brighton.  Both campers and parents sign that they will abide by this policy and we ask that they honor their word in this regard. If parents feel that they cannot send their daughter to camp without a cell phone, we kindly request that their daughter NOT attend Brighton.

Certification: At Brighton Camp each camper will be Young Women Camp Certified for levels one and two.  Campers will return home with their certification requirements fulfilled and their certificate signed.

Communication with Campers: Spending a week in the beautiful mountains of Brighton is amazing! To make sure each camper can fully enjoy this wonderful experience as well as the full schedule of camp activities, we do not allow personal phone calls or visits to camp.  Parents will be contacted if campers become ill, overly homesick, or experience significant problems. Campers love receiving mail so please feel free to write your daughters. Mail is received in camp every weekday. Please send letters only (no packages). To ensure letters arrive on time we suggest mailing them by Friday of the week before your camper goes to camp.  The mailing address is:
Your Camper's Name
c/o Brighton LDS Girls Camp
8409 Brighton Loop
Brighton, UT 84121

Dress Code: Modesty standards as outlined in For the Strength of Youth are observed at camp. Wearing short shorts, tank tops, sleeveless shirts, short skirts with leggins, etc. are not acceptable for camp clothing. To ensure your safety, sandals are not allowed. (Flip flops may be worn but only when showering.) Socks must be worn with shoes. We recommend you wear comfortable, inexpensive and well-worn clothes at camp.

Disabilities: We can accommodate girls with moderate handicaps or disabilities. If you have a camper who falls into this category, please contact the Brighton president, Kerry Marshall (Zim) at 1-503-307-6321 with any questions or concerns. Please note any disabilities or handicaps the camp registration form. This helps us to give each camper the best care while at camp.

Food Allergies and Dietary Concerns: We can make accommodations for campers who have moderate food allergies and/or special dietary needs.  We do not accommodate food preferences.  Please list any of these needs on the camp registration card.  You will be contacted by one of our cooks before camp to talk about the needs of your camper.

Electronics: Electronic devices are not allowed at camp. Leave at home ALL cell phones, music players, game players, etc. Attending Brighton camp allows each young woman to leave the world behind and enjoy the beauty of Heavenly Father’s creations. Electronic devices are distracting and disruptive. If any of these devices are brought to camp they will be collected by the counselors, held by the Director and returned at the end of the week. If you cannot come to camp without a cell phone, we kindly ask you to stay home. Parents, if you feel uncomfortable about sending your daughter to camp without a cell phone, please do not send her.  We suggest you discuss any concerns with your stake leaders.

Health Issues or Concerns: Campers with medical issues requiring prescription medications must be able to manage and administer their own medications. Staff members are not allowed to administer prescription medications. There is always a First-Aid Specialist in camp to handle illnesses and injuries. A registered nurse on our executive committee keeps in contact with this specialist. Parents will be made aware of anything serious. Please note any medical conditions or issues on the camp registration form. This helps us to give each camper the best care while at camp.

Hikes: All campers will go on a moderate hike during the week in the beautiful mountains of Brighton!  Those wishing to take a more advanced hike can sign up for the "Above and Beyond" hike.

Lost & Found: If you have lost an item at camp, please contact your stake leaders first.  If they do not have your item, then you contact us here. We highly encourage parents to NOT send expensive clothes, sleeping bags, cameras, camping equipment, etc. to camp. We cannot be responsible or liable for lost items.  Any items not claimed by the close of camp will be donated to Deseret Industries.

Luggage: Young women are allowed to bring one medium-size duffle bag or suitcase, one warm sleeping bag, one school-size backpack and one pillow. Just bring the basics –it is a steep hike up Hernia Hill to the cabins! Expensive clothes and other valuable belongings should be left at home. Please clearly label all items with your stake, name and phone number.
Meals and Snacks: Brighton serves three healthy and delicious meals each day. A variety of food is offered. Time is made each day for snacks that the camp has already prepared for the campers. Please leave all candy and goodies at home because these items attract mice and other critters into the cabins.

Medications: All medication (including over the counter items) must come to camp in the original container labeled with instructions. Please do not bring medication in baggies, mixed with other medications or other containers. As directed by Church liability policies for camps, each camper is responsible to take her own medications. Counselors will help remind campers to take their medication at correct intervals.  If requested, medications can be secured.

Open Registration: Any spaces available after our regular registration process has concluded will be open for individual campers (who meet our age requirements) to register to attend Brighton Camp.

Overnighter: The overnighter (sleeping out-of-doors on ground pads/tarps) is a program element available to all campers, depending on weather and outdoor safety conditions.

Participation: Young women are expected to follow the camp schedule and to participate in outlined activities including hikes, daily cleaning assignments, and service projects.  The more you put into the camp the more you will get out of camp!

Questions: Each stake has a Brighton representative to help answer your questions about camp. If you have a question, please contact your Brighton representative.  Your stake YW president will be able to tell you who currently serves as your stake's Brighton Representative.

Registration Forms: Each young woman must complete and sign a registration form. Parents must also sign the form.  We ask each camper and parent or guardian to read this “Information and Camp Policies for Campers and Parents” packet and sign that they agree to abide by the Brighton camp policies as outlined.

Registration Fees: The fee for participating stakes is $120.00 per camper. These stakes pay an annual maintenance fee and have guaranteed space priority. The fee for non-participating stakes is $145.00 per camper. These fees include lodging, meals, camp certification, and transportation to and from the central bus location. Payments should be handled through your ward clerk and stake Brighton representative.

If you are an independent camper or Mountaineer camper attending Brighton camp, make your check payable to “Brighton LDS Girls Camp” for $145.

Registration Refunds: Our camp budget is planned months in advance so there is no allowance for refunds. If a camper cannot attend the week for which she is scheduled, she is welcome to attend a different week of camp, based on space availability. She also could find another camper to go in her place. Fee reimbursement should be agreed upon by the individuals involved.  In cases of financial hardship, please consult your bishop.  We reserve the right to rescind registration and reimburse fees for safety and health reasons.

Respect for Camp Property: We expect campers to treat the natural environment with respect. Campers are responsible for the cleanliness of their cabin and camp area.  National Forest Service regulations are observed. Any damage to the cabins or buses caused by campers will be the responsibility of those campers and their parents or guardians. Financial arrangements for any repairs will be made with the parents or guardians.

Showers: Campers will be responsible for their own personal cleanliness and hygiene.  Please be aware that campers will have the opportunity to shower once during their week at camp.

Spending Money: Campers may bring extra money for use in the Craft House, but this is optional. The following items are available for purchase: craft items ($1.00 to $10.00), staff pictures ($1.00), candy and other treats ($1.00), T-shirts ($5.00 to $7.00), camp song books ($6.00), CD of camp songs ($6.00), hoody camp sweatshirts ($20.00).  Each camper will receive one Brighton T-shirt at no additional charge. There will also be some crafts available at no charge.

Transportation: Commercial buses are chartered to transport campers from our central bus location to and from camp.  Please check this website for the address of and directions to the central bus location. Campers are expected to arrive no later than 8:00 a.m. so they can check-in with their stake Brighton representative and load their gear on the bus.  The buses are scheduled to depart promptly at 8:30 am.

Buses will return to the central bus location between 12:25 and 12:35 p.m. on Friday afternoon.  We recommend that parents arrive at the central bus location no later than 12:15 pm. DON'T BE LATE!

Transportation exceptions must be approved and arranged with Brighton presidency. If approved, the camper is expected to arrive at Brighton camp on Monday morning at 8:45 a.m. and to be picked up on Friday at noon. Please be prepared to be flexible.
